A region that deserves your attention

Though Spain is a very popular country among tourists, it has a few areas that people don’t know too many details about. Extremadura is one of them. One of the least visited areas in Spain, it deserves a lot of attention due to its beauty and its historical richness. The land is inhospitable because it has to endure very hot summers as well as freezing winters, but Extremadura represented home to a series of Conquistadores who used all their ideas and efforts to create wonderful palaces and spectacular mansions. Extremadura is one of those regions in Spain containing examples of very fine architecture, which can only be discovered and understood when seen.

Places to visit in Extremadura

Caceres is one of the most amazing cities not only in the region, but in the entire country. The Romans, the Moors and the Conquistadores discovered the importance of the city, and they have all left their legacy on its walls, its streets, its buildings, and its monuments. Surrounded by the old, imposing Roman walls, the city holds within these walls, Moorish elements are visible at every step. If you need further proof that this is a place that deserves your attention, the fact that it was the very first Spanish city to be designated a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO should satisfy you. Isn’t that impressive?
Trujillo is another superb town in Extremadura, famous for one of the most beautiful and attractive squares in the whole of Spain. Along its sides, the square displays a spectacular collection of mansions, churches and palaces built in the Renaissance style. One of these mansions is a treasure trove of history, because it once belonged to one of the brothers of the great Conquistador Fernando Pizarro. A small tip to ensure that you get the most out of your trip - make sure that you also visit the square by night, because the lights that decorate the monuments will take your breath away with their beauty.

Another World Heritage Site in Extremadura is Merida, famous for being the best preserved city built by the Romans. Number three on the World Heritage Sites list is the Guadalupe Monastery, a Gothic and Mudejar building which is imposing and attractive at the same time. Make a point of visiting Extremadura even if it is not a very popular tourist region in Spain and you won’t regret your choice.
